7 Common Homogeneous PVC Flooring Installation Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
In the flooring trade there is an old line: “three parts material, seven parts installation.” A premium homogeneous sheet can still fail early if the floor is laid wrong. Here are the seven errors we see most often on commercial jobs — and the fix for each.
1. Uneven or damp subfloor
High and low spots create stress points; moisture trapped under the sheet causes bubbling and seam opening. The subfloor must be dry (moisture content ≤ 3% for concrete), flat (≤ 3 mm deviation over a 2 m straightedge after self-levelling), clean and dust-free before any adhesive touches it.
2. Poor seam welding
In healthcare and labs the seam is where hygiene is won or lost. A weak seam lets dirt and water under the surface. Use a seam groover to cut a clean channel, then heat-weld with the correct rod and temperature, and trim after the weld cools. Done right, the joint is near-invisible and watertight.
3. Walking on it before the adhesive cures
Adhesive needs 24–48 hours to set. Foot traffic or rolling loads too early shift the sheet and leave weak spots that show up months later as lifts and indentations. Keep the area closed during cure.
4. Wrong temperature or humidity
Below ~10–15 °C the vinyl goes stiff and hard to handle; above 35 °C it expands and fits poorly. Site temperature should sit in roughly 10–28 °C with relative humidity 20–75%. Unroll and let the material acclimatise on site for 24+ hours first.
5. Skipping the floor roller
Rolling pushes out trapped air and locks the sheet to the adhesive. Skip it and you get bubbles and hollow spots that fail under carts. Use a heavy roller for open areas and a hand roller at edges, corners and doorways.
6. No expansion gap
Vinyl moves with temperature. With no room to expand it presses against walls and buckles. Leave a perimeter gap (roughly 0.2–0.5 mm at seams, and under ~1 cm at doorways and skirting) so thermal movement has somewhere to go.
7. Untrained crew, no post-inspection
Inexperienced installers miss subfloor prep, misalign seams and under-roll. A final inspection — bubbles, loose edges, weld quality, alignment — catches small defects before they become warranty claims.

FAQ
Can I install homogeneous sheet myself? For a small office yes, with the right tools. For hospitals, labs and large areas, use a crew trained in heat-welding — the seam is the part most DIY jobs get wrong.
How long before I can use the floor? Usually 24–48 hours after laying, once the adhesive has cured and the weld has cooled.
What if I already see bubbles? Lift and re-lay the affected section before the adhesive fully sets; once cured, a patch weld is the usual repair.
